Opened in 1910, it’s known for its grand ballroom, classic architecture, and standout service — but what surprised me most was how approachable it still feels.
From waltzing in the ballroom to experiencing dinner at The St. Paul Grill and brunch at The Drake, this stay was equal parts elevated and relaxed — the kind of place where you can dress up for dinner and still feel completely at ease.
And yes — the staircase moment is absolutely required.

We had the chance to tour the property with Lesli (sales/management), who walked us through the history of the hotel, the design of the event spaces, and how they continue to use the property in ways that feel relevant today.
She also shared insight into upcoming renovations, with a clear focus on preserving the character and era of the property — enhancing it without losing what makes it special.
From ballroom dances to afternoon tea to events like “Dancing Under the Chandeliers” (which I fully intended to attend… but ended up closing a pharmacy instead), this isn’t a hotel that’s stuck in the past — it just knows how to carry it forward well.

We had brunch at The Drake… and it deserves a moment.
The menu leans classic, but done with intention — the kind of place where brunch feels a little more elevated without losing its comfort.
The cinnamon roll is the kind of pastry that arrives at the table and immediately becomes the conversation.
Rich, warm, and absolutely meant to be shared… even if you briefly consider not.
The St. Paul Grill
The St. Paul Grill is where the experience really settles in.
Dark wood. Low lighting. A bar lined with rare spirits — and walls that quietly tell stories, with Minnesota icons like Judy Garland, Charles Lindbergh, and John Nasseff looking on.
And this one? You experience it.
I did the wagyu on hot rocks, which turns dinner into something a little more interactive — slower, more intentional, and honestly… just fun.
But what made the night stand out wasn’t just the food — it was Rose.

- She created a rhythm to the experience — from dinner, to dessert, to the bar

- A welcome note and thoughtfully curated spread in the room from Chelsea — homemade chocolates, cheese, fruit, wine
- Bell staff in top hats, a detail that somehow feels completely natural here
The extra touch
And Rose, again — packaging our leftovers, labeling them, and placing them in a guest refrigerator at reception so we could enjoy them later.
After brunch, we added to the bag and picked everything up seamlessly.
It’s polished, but still warm — and that balance is what makes it memorable.
