The Saint Paul Hotel in St. Paul, Minnesota is one of those rare properties that blends historic charm with a genuinely memorable guest experience. Opened in 1910, it’s known for its grand ballroom, classic architecture, and standout service — but what surprised me most was how approachable it still feels.
From waltzing in the ballroom to experiencing dinner at The St. Paul Grill and brunch at The Drake, this stay was equal parts elevated and relaxed — the kind of place where you can dress up for dinner and still feel completely at ease.
And yes — the staircase moment is absolutely required.
The Saint Paul Hotel
Where old-world elegance still feels lived in
The Saint Paul Hotel has been doing that since 1910.
The ballroom? It practically begs for a waltz.
…which we did.
And the staircase?
Also begs for a dramatic entrance.
…which I filmed. Obviously.
A Property That Knows Exactly What It Is
What stood out most wasn’t just how it looked — it was how intentional everything felt.
We had the chance to tour the property with Lesli (sales/management), who walked us through the history of the hotel, the design of the event spaces, and how they continue to use the property in ways that feel relevant today.
She also shared insight into upcoming renovations, with a clear focus on preserving the character and era of the property — enhancing it without losing what makes it special.
From ballroom dances to afternoon tea to events like “Dancing Under the Chandeliers” (which I fully intended to attend… but ended up closing a pharmacy instead), this isn’t a hotel that’s stuck in the past — it just knows how to carry it forward well.
The Vibe: Elevated, But Not Intimidating
There’s a balance here that’s hard to get right.
What it invites you into
- Dress up for dinner
- Spend time in the ballroom
- Slow down and actually enjoy the setting
What makes it feel real
Later that evening, the lobby had a completely different energy — people gathered, relaxed, playing games, eating, just enjoying the space.
And somehow… both versions belong here.
The Rooms: Classic, Comfortable, and Intentional
The rooms match the rest of the property — classic, polished, and thoughtfully done.
This isn’t ultra-modern minimalism. It’s warm tones, traditional details, and a space that feels complete the moment you walk in.
What stood out
- Comfortable without feeling overly formal
- Details that feel considered — robes, finishes, layout
- A space that actually lets you unwind after being “on” all day
Stay experience
It’s the kind of room where you can get ready for a dressed-up dinner, then come back, kick off your shoes, and fully relax.
And both feel equally natural.
Amenities That Add to the Experience
This is where the hotel quietly delivers.
Practical details
- Fitness center with incredible views
- Thoughtful in-room details that feel elevated, not excessive
- Full-service experience — valet, concierge, room service
- Luggage hold that made it easy to enjoy brunch without rushing
Why it matters
Everything from the ballroom to the dining areas feels like it was designed to be used, not just admired.
Brunch at The Drake
We had brunch at The Drake… and it deserves a moment.
The menu leans classic, but done with intention — the kind of place where brunch feels a little more elevated without losing its comfort.
The cinnamon roll is the kind of pastry that arrives at the table and immediately becomes the conversation.
Rich, warm, and absolutely meant to be shared… even if you briefly consider not.
The St. Paul Grill
The St. Paul Grill is where the experience really settles in.
Dark wood. Low lighting. A bar lined with rare spirits — and walls that quietly tell stories, with Minnesota icons like Judy Garland, Charles Lindbergh, and John Nasseff looking on.
And this one? You experience it.
I did the wagyu on hot rocks, which turns dinner into something a little more interactive — slower, more intentional, and honestly… just fun.
But what made the night stand out wasn’t just the food — it was Rose.
- Rose made the entire evening feel effortless
- She created a rhythm to the experience — from dinner, to dessert, to the bar
- She shared stories that made the space feel lived in, not just visited
That’s the difference between a good meal and one you actually remember.
The Service
This is where everything comes together.
What made it memorable
- Lesli’s tour added real depth to the experience
- A welcome note and thoughtfully curated spread in the room from Chelsea — homemade chocolates, cheese, fruit, wine
- Bell staff in top hats, a detail that somehow feels completely natural here
The extra touch
And Rose, again — packaging our leftovers, labeling them, and placing them in a guest refrigerator at reception so we could enjoy them later.
After brunch, we added to the bag and picked everything up seamlessly.
It’s polished, but still warm — and that balance is what makes it memorable.
Don’t Be That Tourist Tip
Don’t overthink this one.
You don’t need to change who you are to enjoy a place like this.
- Lean into the experience
- Take the staircase video
- Stay a little longer at dinner
Final Thought
Some places are beautiful. Some places are memorable.
And then there are places like this — where the setting, the service, and the experience all come together in a way that actually stays with you.
Its location also makes it easy to take in the best of the city — whether that’s the arts, nearby venues, or a night out — something the staff naturally weaves into your stay with questions like, “Do you have tickets for a show?”

Why the right stay matters
Properties like this are exactly why I love helping people find the right stay for their trip — it’s never just about where you sleep, it’s about how the whole experience comes together.
